Since living off-grid comes with electrical challenges, utilizing propane appliances wherever possible makes a lot of sense. Using propane for as many appliances as possible takes the onus off the power system and is far more efficient for the use of fuel.
Propane fueled water heaters are an obvious start. A properly installed on demand water heater keeps the use of fuel low while providing nearly endless hot water for the user. For homes used year round, a water heater with a tank may be a better choice.
Propane fueled refrigerators are efficient and popular options for off-grid situations. While the unit is quite a bit more costly, the investment in a fridge that doesn’t require electricity will be worth it in terms of convenience. Compressors, such as are used to keep a fridge cold, draw a lot of power making them a hurdle for power systems.
Vented propane heating is a must for any cabin used in the winter. Thermostat controlled heaters can warm your small space quickly and efficiently while the wood fire is built. They can be programmed to maintain temperatures adequate to prevent freezing. Guests appreciate walking into a heated welcoming space, even in off grid cabins. While wood burning stoves can heat the cabin for most of the winter, there’s always that one week!
Propane appliances need special attention that some electrical appliances don’t require. With any propane appliance, the area where the flame occurs must be kept clean. Signs that it might require maintenance would be an orange or sputtering flame, intermittent operations or the unit may turn off.
